Charles
“Charlie” McKeown
Commissioner
for
7th Ward
Commissioner Charles “Charlie” McKeown has
always been there for us. When Hurricane Isabel struck, Charlie walked
the streets at 1:00 a.m. to personally inspect electric lines. His
observations helped PECO restore power to our
neighborhoods nearly 48 hours faster than in neighboring communities.
When residents and business needed
additional parking along Central and Ryers Avenues, Charlie led efforts
to construct twenty five new parking spaces. And when Cheltenham
residents worried about increased crime, Charlie hired six extra police officers, created a community police bicycle
patrol and started the Town Watch Program in East Cheltenham.
This is the kind of everyday service that
Cheltenham residents have come to expect from Charlie McKeown. During
his ten years on the Board of Commissioners Charlie has been one of our community’s most dependable and effective leaders.
From rebuilding the township fire training facility to restoring eroded
creek beds, to renovating our neighborhood parks… Charlie has never
stopped working to keep Cheltenham Township a great place to live, work
and raise a family.
In 2004, the non-denominational The Golden Heart Group, which
recognizes our community's unsung heroes, included Charlie among its
award recipients.
Charlie is a life-long resident of
Cheltenham Township, where he and his wife Nancy have raised six
children. Charlie graduated Presentation BVM, Cardinal Dougherty and
Pierce Business College, and he managed a successful small business for
over twenty years. An active member of our community, Charlie is a long
time volunteer with Cheltenham Little League, the Cheltenham Jay-vees
and the Boy and Cub Scouts.
